According to turn-of-the-20th-century Dutch-German-French ethnographer Arnold van Gennep, a rite of passage is a celebration of the passage which occurs when an individual leaves one group to enter another. And so it is that May and June are rite-of-passage-laden for the US and other countries whose school calendar serves up graduations during those months.

Today, wrapping up an exciting week in Toronto and Mississauga, Canada, for our annual FrontRow International Sales Summit, it is not the unexpected snow, chilly rain or wind gusts that have my attention. I am struck by the enormity and purpose of Toronto’s CN Tower and drawing unexpected parallels between it and our work in education.

It’s 2017 and technology has permeated every square inch of classrooms! From virtual reality learning modules and 3-D printing to wearables and gargantuan 100’ displays replacing the former 60’ screens, education technology—which has filled classrooms for decades—is more than ever, all the rage.

Though today we build technology to serve the broad communication needs of all students and school staff, FrontRow began life in 1963 as Phonic Ear, a company focused on the needs of students with hearing impairment and their parents, audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and teachers of the deaf and hard-of-hearing. It was through our dedicated work within those communities that we pioneered the use of wireless audio technology in the classroom. It was also through the encouragement of dedicated hearing health professionals that we developed listening solutions for the student body at large. We wouldn’t be where we are today without all of you.

One of the things we take pride in here at FrontRow is keeping our finger on the pulse of the education sector’s needs. That means checking in with teachers and administrators to discover any pain points they may have within their classroom technology usage.

We learned a long time ago that when people actually get a chance to hear one of our FrontRow systems, either at a tradeshow or in their own classroom, they are often amazed at what a difference a little amplification makes.
